Impeachment: Linturi pleads his case as committee retreats to write report

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi is pleading with the 11-member committee to save him from impeachment saying allegations levelled against him in relation to the fake fertilizer scandal have not been substantiated.

Linturi who put up a spirited fight in his closing remarks Friday, the last day of the hearing said it was unfortunate that the session had been turned into prosecuting his failed love life and had nothing to do with the alleged fake fertilizer.

Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, the mover of the motion was dealt a blow after his application to the 11-member Select Committee to Summon the Agriculture PS Kipronoh Ronoh and KEL Chemicals Chief Operating Officer Devesh Patel was denied.

The MP who protested the ruling walked out of the proceedings in disapproval however maintaining the CS must be held liable for the fake fertilizer scandal

The Agriculture CS now has a date with destiny on Monday when the committee tables its report during a special sitting of parliament.

The Naomi Waqo-led committee has retreated to write a report; if the allegations against him are supported he will be accorded an opportunity to defend himself before voting.

“From here we embark on the report writing exercise as required under Article 152 (7) of the Constitution. We shall be retreating from today begin report writing. As you are aware, we are required to table our report to the House by Monday, 13th May 2024. It will therefore be a working weekend for all of us”, the chair said.

“In this regard, allow me to now conclude by noting that we shall analyse each and every evidence that was submitted to this committee by all parties and make our findings in accordance with the requirements of Article 152(9) of the Constitution” Waqo said.

The committee comprises six members from the ruling coalition, four from Azimio and a representative from Jubilee.

Pursuant to Article 152(10) of the Constitution, a resolution requiring the President to dismiss a Cabinet Secretary must be supported by a majority of the Members of the National Assembly which is 175 Members.

Linturi is the first CS to face the impeachment axe, if ousted, he can appeal in court.
