KenGen has said they are in the final phase of constructing the 42.5MW Seven-Fork Solar PV Plant to increase power generation in the country.

Speaking during the 12th KenGen Good to Great Global Innovation Seminar, KenGen Managing Director Peter Njenga said innovation propels progress and transformation in every facet of human endeavor hence the construction of the Seven-Fork Solar PV project.

“Going forward, KenGen is embarking on several projects aimed at increasing energy generation capacity and maximizing benefits for the nation. We are happy to note that we have secured the necessary approvals for a 42.5MW Seven-Fork Solar PV project and are currently closing the initial project preparation works. We are now ready for the project construction phase,” said Njenga.

KenGen intends to use the suns energy during the day when the intensity is high and especially during the dry season to generate power and conserve water during the night.

Njenga said Seven Forks dams hold the bulk of the water flowing from River Tana, and have reached full capacity and now hold a combined volume of more than 2.6 billion cubic meters against a total flow from River Tana estimated at five billion cubic meters.

KenGen Chairman Julius Migos Ogamba on his part said innovation at the company has helped improve existing policies and structures as well as building the organization’s sustainability goals.

“KenGen has embedded innovation into its operations, reaping rewards through revenue generation, seizing new business prospects, and extending its reach across Africa,” added Ogamba.

The power generator says such new investments will increase operations, boost sales, and cut costs to maintain business reliance.

The solar plant will also help the firm reduce fossil fuel consumption and diversify energy sources.

KenGen plans to embark on a diversification strategy that will expand to non-electricity generation sources like geothermal drilling and exploration consulting, operation and maintenance services and training.
