55 protestors undergo surgeries at KNH

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) says it has admitted at least 120 patients injured during the protest against the finance bill.

According to KNH head of plastic and reconstructive surgery Dr Benjamin Wabwire, 24 patients underwent surgical operation overnight, eight others were under operation, while 23 others were awaiting additional surgical procedures.

Addressing the press, Dr. Wabweri regretted that they received two bodies while one patient succumbed while undergoing treatment. He mentioned the majority of those admitted sustained rubber bullet wounded adding that they were prioritising those who needed urgent procedures.

” KNH being a referral hospital continues to receive more patients, during the day many were protestors from CBD but overnight we got more patients from Githurai. As a hospital, we are prepared to handle anything. We hope we won’t have any more demos. But in the event of an influx, we have KU referral” the doctor said.

Dr Wabwire added that several other patients with soft wounds continue to receive treatment at the facility.

He further said the number of patients could increase since the facility continues to receive referred patients from other facilities.

The hospital on its X Tuesday said they started receiving casualties form as early as midday from 11 am on Tuesday. 72 were treated and discharged.

“We started receiving casualties from the demonstration in CBD from around noon. So far we have received 45, seven being female with different kinds of injuries. Treatment and surgeries for the casualties are ongoing. We have had no mortalities from the demonstration so far”.

The hospital has established an information desk to ease the identification process for relatives.

During the protests, part of the Kenyan parliament was set alight after protesters breached the complex.
