Athletics Kenya picks 19 for the World U20 Championship

 

African 800metre champion Sarah Moraa and 3000 metre steeplechase silver medalist Edmund Serem are among  19 athletes who have been selected in team Kenya for the World Under 20 athletics championships slated for Lima, Peru this August.

The team was named today following the conclusion of a two day national trials at the Nyayo National stadium.

Sarah Moraa won the 800m final but missed out on an Olympic Games ticket again but she will at least be heading to Peru to compete alongside Janet Jepkemoi in the World Under 20 championship.

Edmund Serem, fresh from bagging silver in Cameroon, dominated the 3000msc to qualify for the world championships and will be joined by Mathew Kosgei.

Mercy Chepkemoi and Sheila Jebet will be the only athletes who will double up at the championships, with  Chepkemoi  selected in the 3,000m and 5,000m while  Jebet will be competing in the 1500m and 5,000m races.

Sprinters failed to make the cut during the two day trials.

The team is set to report for residential training camp later next month ahead of the global championships scheduled 27th-31st of August this year.

Kenya finished 4th in the 2022 edition in Cali,Colombia  with 3 gold, 3 silver and 4 silver medals.
