Best in show: Livestock and rodeo, parks, museums, and more

To truly experience Houston, a visit to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a must. Known as the largest rodeo in the world, this event offers a fantastic introduction to Texas culture. “It is truly a world-class event and a fantastic crash course in Texas culture that any new Houstonian should put on their calendars,” says Jazzmine Woodard, a Houston travel blogger. “At the rodeo, you can sample local cuisine at the barbecue cook-off or on the fairgrounds, listen to live music from local acts and global superstars at nightly concerts, get outfitted in cowboy gear, and much more. Rodeo season runs from mid-February to mid-May, so mark your calendars, y’all!”

Houston is not just skyscrapers and highways; it is full of beautiful natural landscapes. Lisa Soots recommends places like Hermann Park, Memorial Park, Discovery Green, and Buffalo Bayou Park. With options for hiking, biking, water activities, playgrounds, events, and more, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. “With countless more parks throughout Harris County, you’ll never run out of exciting outdoor activities in Houston,” says Lisa Soots of  www.followsoots.com.

A standout favorite is the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, which features five miles of trails through native prairie, savanna, wetland, woodland, and riparian habitats. “One of the favored trails is the Donor Boardwalk, offering a peaceful stroll that transports visitors out of the city while still enjoying all its amenities,” says Jackie Williams, a local freelance illustrator, graphic designer, and writer.

The McGovern Centennial Garden is such a beautiful spot to relax, take in the scenery of the grounds, and the Museum District! Jessica Winter from Family Traveling USA loves that McGovern Centennial Gardens is free to enter and has a free three-hour parking lot. “One of our favorite places to visit in Houston is the McGovern Centennial Gardens,” she adds.

The last stop on this nature journey is Lake Houston Wilderness Park. It’s a great place for camping, hiking, and swimming, plus it’s just 30 minutes from downtown. The Texas Wanders team recommends booking a tent site or renting one of their adorable A-frames and spending the day hiking the trails and cooling off in Peach Creek. They also suggest making sure to bring plenty of bug spray, sunscreen, and water shoes.

Another highly recommended spot is to visit the Children’s Museum Houston.  The museum is an interactive museum dedicated to fostering learning and discovery for children. It offers a variety of exhibits and activities designed to engage kids in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) education. The native Houstonians at Runaway Radio highly suggest buying a membership. They say “Not only is it a great organization to support, but your kids will probably want to go so much that it will pay for itself.”
