Jerotich and Kipkosgei to lead team Kenya at the World School Cross Country Championships

Joyline Jerotich and Phanuel Kipkosgei will lead Kenya in the 2024 International Schools Federation (ISF) World Cross Country Championships set for Ngong Racecourse this Sunday, May 12th.

The one-day event will see athletes compete in three categories: U-12, U-15, and U-18, for both boys and girls.

While providing updates on the championship in Nairobi on Thursday, Race Local Organising Committee Chief Executive Officer Barnaba Korir stated: “Based on the organisation that has been put in place, I’m confident that this event will be memorable not only for the participating athletes but also for the over 460 delegates expected.”

Kenyan team Head of Delegation Nelson Sifuna assured the country of a resounding win, claiming that he is leading a very brave and organised team that is out to fight a great battle in the challenge.

Kipchumba Maiyo, Chairman of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association, expressed pride in Kenya’s line-up for the event, stating that it is a quality squad that was recruited from the grassroots.

“There was no shortcut in the selections; we took the right path. This contingent will demonstrate to the rest of the world what sort of metal Kenya is made of, emphasised Maiyo.

Uros Savic, Event Director of the International School Sports Federation (ISF), noted that the championship will serve as an educational excursion for the participating pupils.

“Even though we will have no prize money for the categories contested, the cross country will leave a legacy on the students; it will teach them some of the values needed to excel in life,” Savic stated.

Athletes from Chile docked in the country on Thursday morning with athletes from other nations expected later today including Ireland, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Italy, and England and last delegations expected to jet in tomorrow.

The countries that have thus far sent their representatives include Kenya, Chile, Uganda, Qatar, China, England, Ireland, Morocco, Tanzania, Rwanda, Kenya, Namibia, Mexico, the Czech Republic, New Zealand, Nigeria, Croatia, Turkey, Luxembourg, and Uganda.

The championships will also be graced by ISF president Laurent Petrynka, with Kenya being the second nation in Africa to stage the event after Marrakech, Morocco, in 2000.

The championships will be televised live on KBC Channel 1 from 10am this Sunday.
