The National Assembly has began debating the Finance Bill 2024 ahead of a crucial vote scheduled for Thursday morning.

Finance Committee Chair Kimani Kuria moved the Bill, highlighting key provisions and changes made on the Bill.

Speaker Moses Wetang’ula urged members to debate the contents of Bill from an informed position.

“On Thursday morning, we’ll again sit on the Finance Bill and House Business Committee has directed that we will then vote on that Bill on Thursday afternoon,” said Wetang’ula.

On Tuesday, the government withdrew several contentious issues from the Bill following a Kenya Kwanza Parliamentary Group meeting chaired by President William Ruto.

Removed proposals included a 16 percent VAT on bread, VAT on sugar transportation, VAT on financial services foreign exchange transactions, a 2.5 percent Motor Vehicle Tax, and an excise duty on vegetable oil.
