UDA MPs opposed to Finance Bill risk expulsion from Party, Malala warns

UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala has issued a stern warning to the party’s legislators against opposing Finance Bill 2024, which advanced to its second reading last Thursday.

Speaking in Butere, Kakamega County on Sunday, Malala stated that UDA MPs who vote against the bill should prepare to leave the party and run as independent candidates in 2027 elections.

“The ideals of your party are supreme to your personal thoughts. If you are a UDA member, the ideologies of the UDA party should come before your personal interests. If any UDA MP votes no to the finance bill on Tuesday, they should leave the party and become independent candidates,” said Malala.

Malala’s comments come amidst public protests against the proposed finance bill, with more demonstrations set to take place tomorrow.

The UDA SG also alleged that the protests are being fuelled by external influences, questioning the source of funding for the nationwide demonstrations.

“We know there are individuals hiding behind the Gen Z. These people are not Kenyans. Foreigners are funding the protests because we have increased taxes on imported goods. They are now funding NGOs to ensure the finance bill is dropped so that their goods can continue dominating the Kenyan market,” Malala stated.

“Where are the protestors getting the money to the extent that they have lawyers, free medicine, and water? Where do you think the money is coming from?” he posed.

However, Malala asked the police to exercise restraint and provide protection to the young protestors, adding that he will organize a meeting between the youth and President William Ruto.

“I urge the Inspector General of Police, please do not kill any young soul. Allow them to demonstrate. At the opportune time, I will personally organise a meeting between them and the leadership of this country,” he said.

The contentious bill sailed through the second reading after 204 MPs endorsed it against 115 who voted no.

Githunguri lawmaker Gathoni Wamuchomba and her Juja counterpart George Koimburi are among UDA MPs who voted against the finance bill.
