Get to know the Colorado Rockies

Established in 1993, the Colorado Rockies quickly captured the hearts of Denver residents and baseball enthusiasts alike. The team’s name pays homage to the majestic Rocky Mountains that dominate Colorado’s landscape, reflecting both strength and resilience — a fitting identity for a team that has had its share of highs and lows.

Over the years, the Rockies have seen their fair share of memorable moments, including their first National League pennant in 2007. Coors Field, with its mile-high altitude, presents unique challenges for both pitchers and hitters, making every game a spectacle of skill and strategy. Erica Mallery from Denver Athletic shared this fun fact with us about the early days of the Rockies: “We (Denver Athletic) actually did the inaugural team game jerseys for Opening Day 1993. We were the primary supplier for the Colorado Rockies (think player jerseys, in stadium fan shirts/giveaways) for many years until MLB tightened up the licensing.”

While many Denverites are still devoted Rockies fans who support the team wholeheartedly, it cannot be denied that the team has struggled in recent years. During the 2023 season, they failed to improve upon their record from the previous season. They unfortunately finished the season with the worst record in the National League at 59-103. However, that has not muddled the excitement for this 2024 season, as fans are still avidly supporting their home team in the hopes of improving upon the team’s performance in recent years!

The stadium: Coors Field

Coors Field is where the action happens when it comes to Denver baseball games. Take a look below to see how to best enjoy it.

Score the best seats for baseball games in Denver!

The Colorado Rockies Home Stadium, Coors Field, is arguably one of the greatest attractions that the team offers today. Located in downtown Denver, Coors Field offers not only a glimpse into the passion of Rockies fans but also a picturesque backdrop against the Rocky Mountains. Local expert Dustin Peyser from CollectingAll, an amazing sports cards and memorabilia marketing group, graced us with this tip for making the most of a game day at the stadium: “For an unforgettable Colorado Rockies game day experience, head to Coors Field and grab a seat in the Rockpile section for some of the best views and energetic atmosphere.”

In addition, Anna DiTommaso from Baseball Bucket List (A great community for baseball fans) also suggested that attendees “Venture up to The Rooftop bar, check out the Purple Seats which mark a mile above sea level, and keep an eye on the center field fountains during any home team home run.” for the best gameday experience.

Try out the amazing food!

Aside from scoring the optimal game day seats, we all know that food and beverages are an integral part of any game day experience for Denver baseball. Below our experts have clued us in to some must-visit food stands and vendors in the stadium:

“Rockies games are probably best experienced on a warm weekday, playing hooky and having a hot dog and a beer.  The food at the stadium is top-tier for baseball stadiums; the Rockie Dog is traditional, but Biker Jim’s is a level up for sure.” shared Seth Garland from local premier marketing agency Versatility Creative Group.

Dustin Peyser from CollectingAll also recommends that game day attendees check out “The Helton Burger Shack for a taste of their legendary burgers.” Sean Green from Sports Gambling Podcast came in as a second proponent of Helton Burger Shack, adding that “The best secret about Coors Field is they have their own brewery inside the stadium Blue Moon, at the Sandlot Brewery. Lastly, make sure you get to Coors Field early and scoop up $3 beers at The Rooftop deck and Coors Light Silver Bullet Bar in right field before the prices go up after first pitch!”

Last but certainly not least, Erica Mallery from Denver Athletic shared these food and beverage recommendations: “Do yourself a favor and try a Tornadough and the Fresh Squeezed Lemonade, too!  We’ve seen a lot of baseball, and there is no better place to catch a game than an evening game in Denver overlooking the gorgeous Rocky Mountains- especially at sunset.”

Cultural impact of Denver baseball:

We know that the Rockies bring excitement to the Denver area, however, one of our experts provided wildly interesting insight into the expansive impact of the Rockies and Coors Field beyond the Denver metropolitan area:

Maptitude is proud to highlight the wide-reaching influence of the Colorado Rockies: Our maps reveal that portions of 12 states and one Canadian province are closest to Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, than to any other field, by car. This means that the Rockies aren’t just Colorado’s team, they’re the heart of baseball for a significant part of North America. So, Coloradans, take pride in your home team’s reach and the community of fans that your state brings together through the love of baseball.”- Stewart Berry from Caliper Mapping Software

Recent performance and biggest rivals:

We’ve already touched on the fact that the Rockies have underperformed in recent years, however like any true sports team their stadium still has plenty of unique features to engage their fans, and a couple of exciting rivalries that are worth exploring as well! Here is what our experts had to say:

Lately, the Rockies have been struggling, so the views on the field haven’t been great. But the surrounding landscape is still one of the best in baseball.Anna DiTommaso from Baseball Bucket List

Rival games against the Los Angeles Dodgers always promise thrilling moments, so mark those dates.–  Dustin Peyser from CollectingAll

It’s been tough sledding to watch the Colorado Rockies over the past five years but when the division rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers or San Francisco Giants are in town you want to be at Coors Field. To make it more enjoyable grab a burger with secret sauce from Helton’s Burger Shack and an Elvis Shake.Sean Green from Sports Gambling Podcast

Best places to watch the baseball game in Denver:

If you’re not up for the excitement of Coors Field, our experts have provided recommendations for how to engage in game-day fun outside of the stadium:

The area around Coors is teeming with a wide range of hang-out options from hole-in-the-wall stops like the Giggling Grizzly to modern joints like Viewhouse Ballpark. So, whether you’re heading into the park to catch the game, visiting the National Ballpark Museum on your way into town, or just trying to be near the gameday energy, The Ballpark District is a great place to be. Anna DiTommaso from Baseball Bucket List

You can always pregame at the many bars around Coors Field like Jackson’s or catch the game on the 165-inch screen at Tom’s Watch Bar.Sean Green from Sports Gambling Podcast

There are a bunch of great bars and restaurants to stop by before heading into the stadium. Lazo Empanadas is one of our favorite go-to’s for a quick bite and drink (they’ve got a great pre-game special!) But don’t wait too long to head into the stadium. Thanks to the new pitch clock the game flies by.Erica Mallery from Denver Athletic

On your way to the game? Stop by 1930 Blake for some great drink prices and check out our rooftop patio that faces the Ballpark. Hungry? Get a Free Hot Dog with every purchase.  Dominic Royal from 1930 Blake
