The Ministry of Health has launched the national school deworming campaign targeting over six million school-going children aged between 2 to 14 years.

The campaign rolled out at Kanjuu primary school in Kirinyaga County has seen 28,000 primary and secondary school teachers from 16 counties trained on how to administer the deworming tablets for proper effectiveness and deal with the probable side effects.

Dr Stephen Kaniti, the director in charge of school health at the Ministry said the government opted to use the school infrastructure as a medium of administering the deworming tablets to reach more children.

He said that statistics show the prevalence of worms among children has dropped from 35 to 5 percent among children noting that the current campaign is aimed at lowering the numbers further from the current 5 percent to less than one percent.

He observed that exercise will ensure the pupils get rid of the worms which cause diseases hence resulting in school absenteeism.

He added that the training includes hygiene and cleanliness both at school and at home.
