Cohesion committee raises concern over skewed employment of female administrators

The National Cohesion and Equal Opportunities Committee has raised concern over a small number of female officers serving in the provincial administration countrywide.

The Committee, during the session chaired by Mwingi North Member Parliament Eng. Paul Nzengu, said the number of female chiefs and their assistants is fewer than their male counterparts.

“During the public participation exercises the Committee conducted in some parts of the country, we established that female chiefs and their assistants were minimal,” said Charles Were (Kaspul).

He added: “This is a matter that the Committee should dig deep into and find out why the Interior Ministry was not giving opportunities to women to occupy the administration jobs in the rural areas.”

He added that his constituency had very few female administrators.

Chairperson Adan Haji said the situation was the same in his Mandera West constituency.

“In the entire constituency we have got only one female chief,” said Haji.

He added that female chiefs were as competent as their male counterparts and urged that they should be given a chance to serve in the positions.

“As a Committee charged with ensuring that Kenyans access equal opportunities in employment, we will address the matter,” he added, noting that the days when women were looked down upon in matters employment are long gone.

The Committee resolved that it will invite the Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo to shade light on the issue.
