Kenya hosts crucial NCTTCA Policy Organs meetings in Nairobi

The Ministry of Roads and Transport hosted the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA) Policy Organs meetings in Nairobi bringing together key stakeholders from various countries in Africa.

The stakeholders included member states of the Northern Corridor among them,Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda.

The meetings included the 57th Meeting of the Executive Committee, which runs from June 24 to June 27, and the 36th Council of Ministers, which will took place on June 28.

The delegates engaged in comprehensive discussions regarding the performance and initiatives of the Northern Corridor, focusing on critical areas such as customs and trade facilitation, transport policy and planning, infrastructure development and management, and private sector investment promotion.

The Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA) is an international organization with a robust legal framework.

Its organizational structure includes the Council of Ministers, Executive Committee, Specialized Technical Committees, Public-Private Partnership Committee, and a Permanent Secretariat.

The primary goal of these meetings is to further the objectives of the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Agreement.

Over the five-day period, the Policy Organs was able to assess the progress reports of various technical programs and evaluated the achievements made following the implementation of directives and recommendations from the past year.

Key agenda items included the review and approval of work plans and budgets for the technical programs for the 2024/2025 period, as well as the discussion of administrative and financial matters related to the NCTTCA Secretariat.

A significant highlight of the meetings was the recruitment of a new Executive Secretary, as the current Executive Secretary’s tenure is set to expire in August 2024. This recruitment is crucial for maintaining the strategic direction and continuity of the Authority’s operations.

The Northern Corridor is a pivotal trade route in East and Central Africa, and the outcomes of these meetings are expected to enhance regional trade and transport efficiency, driving economic growth and integration among member states.

As the meeting concluded stakeholders and observers called  for decisions and resolutions that will shape the future of trade and transport in the region.
