Lupita Nyong’o says she’s “grateful” for Kenyan youth

Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has shared her sentiments on the current state of the country after yesterday’s protests.

Sharing her thoughts, the Oscar award-winning actress saluted the youth.

“I salute the Kenyan youth and I am grateful to them for coming together in an extraordinary way to stand up against the problematic finance bill 2024 as well as to defend and promote the democratic rights of the Kenyan people,” she said.

Protests rocked the capital city of Nairobi yesterday and other parts of the country as the youth demonstrated against the proposed finance bill 2024.

Demonstrators managed to make their way into parliament after the parliamentary committee passed the bill.

The bill moves to State House for the President’s signature.

Furthermore, she consoled the families of Kenyans who lost their lives in the protests.

“I am extremely saddened that lives have been lost in the process and my thoughts are with the victims’ families.

“May the government of Kenya aim to peacefully unify the nation by hearing and addressing the concerns about bad governance that are rightfully being raised.”

After yesterday’s event, President Ruto said “legitimate” protests against proposed tax increases were infiltrated and hijacked by “organized criminals” and that the security of the nation remains his priority.

He did not mention the bill or the lives lost.

Ms Nyong’o’s latest Hollywood project “A Quiet Place: Day One” premieres on June 26.
