ODM Party to initiate recall process for six MPs

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party has announced plans to initiate and lead a recall process for six Members of Parliament elected on the party ticket.

This decision follows a Central Committee meeting held in Nairobi on Tuesday.

Addressing journalists, ODM Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna stated that the six MPs in question disregarded their oaths of office by not considering the wishes of their constituents before voting on the now-withdrawn Finance Bill, 2024.

The MPs targeted for recall are Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Elijah Memusi (Kajiado Central), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), and Emmanuel Wangwe (Navakholo).

“These are repeat offenders who voted against the wishes of the people in 2023 and 2024. There are a few who met their Damascus moment,” said Sifuna.

According to the law, for an MP to be recalled, a voter in the constituency must file a petition with the electoral commission, including signatures from at least 30 per cent of the voters in the constituency and 15 per cent of the voters in each ward.

The recall is deemed successful if at least 50 per cent of the voters in the constituency participate in the polls.

MPs can be recalled on the grounds of violating the Leadership and Integrity law.
