Opposition to Kenyans: Recall MPs who backed Finance Bill 2024

The Azimio la Umoja has challenged the electorate to seek a recall of all Members of the National Assembly who supported the contentious Finance Bill 2024.

Led by Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, the opposition coalition accused lawmakers who backed the bill they claimed would introduce taxes that will overburden ordinary citizens and said Kenyans should use all constitutional channels available to them to remove them from office.

Kalonzo says the Kenya Kwanza administration, through the latest Bill, has arbitrarily increased the cost of living, and the tax burden leaving Kenyans jobless and penniless.

“As a coalition, we urge all Kenyans whose Members of Parliament voted for the Finance Bill to begin the process of their Recall. They are Dishonourable Members. We further ask Gen Zs to develop innovative and creative ways of expediently and accurately effecting this,” he said at a press conference Friday

According to Edwin Sifuna, the Secretary General of ODM, the High Court has also handed political parties a solid weapon to recall errant MPs after declaring sections relating to the recall of MPs unconstitutional.

“After this vote (on Finance Bill 2024) we are going to try that new provision of the law on recalling MPs who do not follow what the public is saying,” he said

Sifuna noted that every time the party institutes legal proceedings against lawmakers whose conduct is questionable, they run to court and obtain court orders. He warned that those days are long gone.

“There are MPs who survive by virtue of court orders. But now after the High Court decision we are going to pick two and demonstrate to them that they are not the bosses of the people but people are their bosses,” stated the Nairobi Senator

The opposition coalition says its instructions to the members were clear as far as the Finance Bill 2024 is concerned yet some chose to go against the wishes of the coalition.

The opposition praised 115 MPs who voted against the Bill terming them patriots.

The party says the 204 MPs who voted in favour of the Bill stood against the Nation.

“They are the traitors and the exemplification of the biggest betrayal to Kenyans,” declared Musyoka

According to the Wiper leader, those who backed the Bill turned a blind eye and deaf ear to the suffering of Kenyans.
